Privacy and Data protection - GDPR. At this course law students analyse innovative and often challenging prototypes developed by students at a course called
Media Technology: Theory and development in Media City Bergen. The law students' aim is to assess whether those prototypes are GDPR compliant. If they are not, the question is how the emerging technology may be adjusted to meet the requirements set by law. This year the Norwegian and exchange law students have analysed two lifelogging applications that collect and process enormous amounts of personal data.

The three GDPR analyses"Can “LesStress” survive the GDPR?" by Alessia Di Muro, Aslak Kasti Hyldmo and Catalina Sili.LesStress is an application that aims to reduce the level of stress of its user. An application that everyone needs! Yet, what challenges and risks does it pose to data protection of its user and how can they be addressed? Selected issues concerning LesStress’ compliance with the GDPR will be presented.
Aslak Kasti Hyldmo is a student at the Faculty of Law at the University of Bergen. He wrote his master's thesis on the subject of Contact Tracing Applications and their compatibility with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Catalina Sili is a third year law student at the Faculty of Law at the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University, from Iași, Romania"LesStress: Let us help you make the decisions. Data protection law analysis" by Yucan Yang, Ilona Marzolf and Jasmin Rainbacher.Jasmin Rainbacher studies law at the university of Graz in Austria. Ilona Marzolf is a fourth-year law student (1st year of master’s degree in business law at Aix-Marseille University in France. Yucan Yang is a postgraduate law student from Renmin University of China and an exchange student at UIB. Analysis 3:"Making nonverbal communication digital – a privacy threat? A GDPR compliance assessment of the prototyype WIME" by Anna Calabrò and Cecilie Hanssen Olsen.WIME - What Is My Emotion? - is a conversation supporting technology for people with social-emotional agnosia. How can we help those with “social blindness” while making sure that data protection issues are not neglected? Selected issues raised by WIME will be analysed.
Cecilie Hanssen Olsen is completing her master's degree in law at the University of Bergen this spring. Anna Calabrò is a fourth-year law student at the Faculty of Law at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität in Innsbruck, Austria.About the hostsMalgorzata Cyndecka is Associate professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Bergen. She is also affiliated awith SLATE (Centre for the Science of Learning and Technology, UiB). She works with amongst others data protection and, in particular, the GDPR.
She teaches an elective course JUS294-2-A “Privacy and data protection – GDPR” at the Faculty of Law that is offered in cooperation with TekLab, and is currently designing a
new DIGI course “Personvern og GDPR” that will be offered to all UiB students from Autumn 2022. She has amongst others participated in the
AVT project concerning using learning analytics in the Norwegian schools. The project took part in the Norwegian Data Protection Authority’s
“Sandbox for responsible Artificial Intelligence” in 2021 and 2022. She is also a data protection expert in
UiB’s Pandemic Centre.
Lars Nyre is a Professor at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen. He is the director of
TekLab (a project financed by HK-dir to explore innovation pedagogy for media education) and he is a Professor II at the Department of Media and Social Science at the University of Stavanger.
